Peter Shahid was elected to Charleston City Council in 2015 on the premise that West Ashley had been neglected and ignored. Since taking office, he has worked diligently to improve the quality of life in West Ashley. Some of his accomplishments include:
- Originated and appointed to serve as Chairperson of the West Ashley Revitalization Commission
- Fought to procure funds to:
- Purchase and redevelop the Ashley Landing Piggly Wiggly site
- Secure a nationally known consultant to develop Plan West Ashley
- Upgrade the playground equipment at Lenevar Park
- Resolve flooding in Ashley Hall Manor
- Initiated the creation of the city’s Stormwater Management Department
- Supported strong enforcement of the short-term rental ordinance
Shahid has also provided direction to other important parts of the city’s governance:
- Initiated the creation of the Ad Hoc City Budget Committee
- Initiated a commission to address hotel management
- Initiated the 350 Commission and serve as its chairperson
- Serve as chairperson of the Public Safety Committee
